Sally Louann Thompson (Maurer) passed away on August 16, 2024 at St. Ann’s Hospital in Westerville, Ohio. She was 91.
She was born on March 13, 1933 in Mansfield, Ohio to parents Max and Kathryn (Sunkel) Mosberg. Sally was a graduate of Mansfield Sr. High School with the class of 1951, and attended Kent State University.
Sally worked for many years as the Office Manager for Dr. Semur Rajan, MD. She had a passion for caregiving and loved working with patients and helping people. Her enthusiastic dedication in caring for others inspired her granddaughter to be a nurse, making Sally the proudest grandmother when she obtained her MSN.
In September of 2010, after spending 50 years apart, Sally married her high school sweetheart Walter “Walt” Michael Maurer in Mansfield, Ohio. The couple reunited at a high school class reunion and quickly remembered their adoration for each other. They both shared a love of family and football, and although they lived in Simi Valley, California for half of the year they always made it back home to Ohio each fall to cheer on The Ohio State Buckeyes. Outside of football season Sally enjoyed her time in California, especially since it allowed her to be closer to her grandson while he was stationed in San Diego with the United States Navy. She was incredibly proud of him for his sacrifice and service to our nation.
Sally is survived by her son Max (Ann) Thompson, stepdaughter Beth (Rick) Semsch, stepsons Mike (Sandy) Maurer and Andy (Harvey) Maurer, grandchildren Drew (Taylor) Thompson and Sally (Steven) Thompson Zimmerman, step-grandchildren Jaime and Joanie Semsch, Megan (Nate) Hill, Morgan (Eric) Liffers, Mike (Belenda) Maurer, and Madison Maurer, many step-great-grandchildren, niece Diane (Luke) Land, as well as many cousins.
In addition to her parents, Sally is preceded in death by her husband Walter Michael Maurer, husband Richard Alan Thompson, and brother Bill (Janet) Burke.
In her spare time she enjoyed spending time with animals. Sally spent many years taking care of harness racing horses and a beloved donkey named Carlton. Along with the horses she adored her granddogs Molly, Sophie, Katie, Skylar, Ruca, Stevie, Stanley, Buddy and Ellie. Because of her love of all animals, memorial contributions can be made in her honor to the ASPCA or your local animal rescue organization.
Sally will be laid to rest with her husband Walt on Friday, September 6, 2024. A graveside service will be held at Mansfield Cemetery at 1 pm. Father Evarist Miku will speak.
