Ruth I. Greter, age 80, long-time resident of Mansfield passed away Friday, August 23, 2024 at Ohio Health Mansfield Hospital.

Ruth was born February 24, 1944 in Attica to the late Virgil Frederick and Blanche Irene (Schaaf) Shock. She graduated from Attica High School in the class of 1962. The following year, Ruth met the love of her life, Robert Greter, and they would be married on December 29, 1963. Soon after their marriage, Ruth and Robert relocated to Mansfield and bought a homestead to raise their family.

As an adult, Ruth, found her calling as a homemaker. She kept herself busy by sewing, crocheting and tending to the family’s many farm animals that included chickens, cattle, cats, and the family dog Katie.

She was a proud believer in Christ and regularly attended the First Lutheran Church in Shelby.

Ruth loved to travel. Ruth’s wanderlust sent her and her husband, traveling all over the United States. Through the years, they were able to visit every state, besides Hawaii. Some of her favorite memories included driving across country with Robert visiting National Parks and their many fishing trips up north in the pristine waters of Canada.

When not traveling across country, Ruth enjoyed taking care of her homestead. She had a passion for farming and caring for animals, like the cow that she hand milked every morning when her children were younger. Ruth was an avid gardener. She was known for growing a variety of fruits and vegetables. In the fall she would tirelessly work canning all of the food she had raised during the previous summer. As an animal lover, Ruth even took care of the wild animals living near her home. She would always make sure to keep her bird feeder full, so the birds didn’t go hungry. Ruth’s tender-loving heart and sweet nature will be missed by her friends and family.

She is survived by her children, Ken (Angie) Greter of Shelby, Richard (Carolyn) Greter of Streamwood, IL, and Anne Elizabeth Booker of Alabama; grandchildren, Rob (Charity) Lash of Mansfield, Abbie (Bill) Roberts of Crestline, Andrea Greter of Streamwood, IL, Andrew Greter of Streamwood, IL, Michael Greter of Streamwood, IL, Amber Burkhardt of Findlay, Daniel and Ashley Booker of Marion, Aaron Booker of Galion; great-grandchildren Quin and Blakely Lash, Maylie and Raegan Roberts, Lillian and Danielle Booker; and one brother Robert Shock of Chatfield, Ohio

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Robert Greter in 2022, infant grandson Matthew Robert Greter in 1998 and sister-in-law Doris Shock.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Richland county Humane Society at 3025 Park Avenue West, Ontario, OH 44906.
