Roger L. Sites, age 85, resident of Shelby, OH, passed away Saturday, August 17, 2024, at the Arbors at Mifflin Assisted Living surrounded by his family.
Roger was born August 1, 1939, in Lansing, MI, to William Roger and Ruth (Adams) Sites. He had been a resident of Shelby since 1977. A 1957 graduate of Bucyrus High School, Roger joined the United States Navy in 1958. On May 14, 1960, he married the love of his life, Patricia Dell Newland. Together, they spent 18 years traveling the world on Navy tours, while Roger was stationed at numerous locations in the United States, and overseas, including; Kenitra, Morocco, and Thurso, Scotland. After 20 years of dedication to his country, he retired from active duty as a Senior Chief Petty Officer in 1977.
Roger and Patricia’s love was evident to all that knew them; they truly treasured each other. They enjoyed dancing and looked forward to their annual spring trip to Key West, Florida. As a Navy Vet and avid football fan, Roger enjoyed attending Navy football games in Annapolis, Maryland. He also liked to attend games and root for his hometown Shelby Whippets. When not attending games, Roger would root for the Cleveland Browns, Guardians and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Roger had a deep sense of faith and was a regular member of the First Christian Church in Mansfield. He believed in taking care of himself by walking and would routinely walk laps around the Richland Mall.
He is survived by his two sons, Gregory S. (Patricia) Sites of Sheffield Lake, Ohio, and Jeffrey S. (Pamela) Sites of Wilmington, Ohio; grandchildren Chelsea (Kyle) Cummings, Megan (Justin) Shigley, Rebecca (Kyle) Terry, and Elizabeth (Robert) Epp; three great-grandsons, Weston and Mason Shigley and Declan Cummings; special friend Ardith Hutson of Shelby; as well as numerous nephews, nieces, and other relatives.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia (Newland) Sites in 2022; three siblings, Ronald Sites, Jean Gifford, Carol Allonas and daughter-in-law Sheila (Rockenfelder) Sites.
Friends may visit 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at the Barkdull Funeral Home & Crematory in Shelby, OH. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM the following day, at the funeral home. Military Honors will be conducted with interment held at Oakland Cemetery in Shelby, OH.
