“Where you are determines your opportunities.”

Everyone has a preference on how they enjoy the arts: attending a show, reading a classic, unlocking the deeper meaning to a poem. Whatever your cup of tea may be, The Mansfield Art Center’s current exhibit, Proximity of Fate, is sure to have all of its attendees in awe.

The exhibit challenges viewers to engage deeply with contemporary art that speaks directly to our present moment. The collection is a dynamic fusion of local, national and international artists, each contributing to a broader narrative about identity, opportunity and the human experience.

“We wanted to make sure we were capturing what is happening now in the world, not just looking back,” Marketing and Development Director Jennifer Beavis said. “Each piece was specifically chosen to tell a story, and they’re all confrontational in different ways.”

Proximity of Fate had its opening night on Sat. Aug. 10, bringing people together to discuss the many themes throughout the exhibit.

Weaving together stories and art: The exhibit as a whole

Proximity of Fate showcases 21 artists and 33 pieces of artwork with themes varying from motherhood, the struggles of youth, death of a loved one and more. The exhibit is curated by Openbox Founder + Principal Marquise Stillwell with support from Curatorial Advisors Alice Gray Stites (Chief Curator, 21C Museum Hotels) and Justine Ludwig (Executive Director, Creative Time); and Project Manager Karina Salamanca.

The title speaks to the idea that where you are can have a profound impact on your opportunities. This theme runs through the exhibit, with works that explore how fate, chance and circumstance influence our paths in life.

“Art is a struggle. Creating meaningful work, surviving as an artist, being able to reach an audience; everything is impacted by what opportunities exist,” Beavis said.

One of the exhibit’s strengths is its ability to blur the lines between local and global art. Regional artists are showcased alongside established names from New York, Barcelona and beyond. The curators have deliberately mixed these works, ensuring viewers cannot easily distinguish between the local and the international, challenging preconceived notions about where great art comes from.

A space for reflection and connection

As you move through the exhibit, you can’t help but feel the weight of the stories being told. Whether it’s the raw emotion in Jesse Ly’s work, the complex layers of Talle Bamazi’s piece or the overarching theme of fate, each piece invites you to pause, reflect and connect. Proximity of Fate isn’t just an exhibit to be viewed—it’s one to be experienced.

The Mansfield Art Center offers a space where art can foster understanding, spark conversation and perhaps even inspire change. Proximity of Fate is a reminder that art has the power to bring people together, to make us see the world—and each other—in new ways.

Proximity of Fate is sponsored by The Lehman Foundation, Alumni Roofing and The Ohio Arts Council. The exhibit is currently open to the public and will be until Oct. 20.
