MANSFIELD — More than 3,000 runners and walkers “escaped” from the former Ohio State Reformatory on Saturday morning as part of the 10th Shawshank Hustle.

The 7K (4.3 miles) race left the grounds of OSR just after 8 a.m. and began the journey into downtown Mansfield. Runners and walkers made the turn in Central Park and then continued to the finish line back on the grounds of the historic prison.

Participants stopped to take selfies at standup cutouts of characters from the film. Some also stopped downtown to take a free ride at Richland Carrousel Park. There was even a live “Red” look-alike on Main Street who became a popular “selfie station” along the route.

The race was made even more popular this year. Fans from around the world have come into Richland County to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of the iconic “Shawshank Redemption” film. It was primarily shot at OSR and other locations around Mansfield and Richland County.

A few actors from the cast of the movie came to OSR before the race to greet fans and take photos, including Gil Bellows (Tommy Williams) and Mark Rolston (Bogs Diamond).
