MANSFIELD —  A new coffee shop could soon be in Richland and Ashland counties.

Bucyrus natives Joel Spitzer and brother Timothy Plumley are looking to open drive-thru franchise locations of Scooter’s Coffee.

“We both want to shift our focus from real estate a little bit, so this is a combination of our interests,” Spitzer said.

A lawyer at Spitzer Law Offices in Powell, Ohio, Spitzer said the franchises will likely open six to seven months after they secure land for the shops.

“We’re looking at Trimble Road around the Ashland College of Nursing and Lexington-Springmill around Home Depot, but haven’t officially secured those locations yet,” he said.

“We’re hoping to build seven locations in the Richland, Ashland and northeast Ohio areas in around five years.”

Plumley, a physical therapist for Mohican Sports Medicine, said he is interested in scouting locations around Mansfield, Ashland and Lexington.

“It’s based on accessibility, cost, traffic flow and where people live — things like that,” he said.

“We’re still going through that research and finding the best spots but we’re definitely looking forward to getting involved in the community.”

Scooter’s offers drive-thru service & outdoor seating

Scooter’s Coffee was founded in Nebraska in 1998. The coffee kiosks are usually about 664 square feet, according to a press release.

“It’s on an acre or less of land and has sort of a circular drive around it,” Spitzer said. “Most of them have walk-up windows as well, and a few have outdoor seating which I’d like to have.”

Scooter’s has more than 750 stores in 30 states, including seven in Ohio. Its business promise, according to its website, is “Amazing People, Amazing Drinks … Amazingly Fast!”

“At Scooter’s Coffee, we’re not just selling coffee, we’re creating communities,” said Matt Sawicki, vice president of franchise sales. “These new locations represent our commitment to spreading the joy and connection that a great cup of coffee can bring.

“Folks can scoot in, scoot out and get some great-tasting coffee.”

Scooter’s Coffee, based in Omaha, Nebraska, specializes in espresso drinks, fruit smoothies and baked-from-scratch pastries. Its signature beverage is the Caramelicious, which Spitzer said is probably his favorite.

“Their cinnamon rolls are also absolutely fantastic,” he said.

Scooter’s also offers organic hot and iced teas, brewed coffee, cold brew coffee, breakfast items and a kids menu.

Spitzer and Plumley visited different Scooter’s franchises and decided they liked the business model and the support Scooter’s Coffee offered franchisees.

“We’ve already gone through some of the training to learn the company’s values and how they support you,” Plumley said.

“We just want to support what’s going on in Mansfield as much as we can. It’s a little corny, but as both a physical therapist and a coffee shop owner, I just want to improve everyone’s day.

“I know a cup of coffee in the morning improves my day.”

Spitzer said each Scooter’s Coffee location has about 12 to 18 employees. The typical hours are between 5 and 6 a.m. to about 8 p.m.

Spitzer said the brothers plan to support community events and schools once their doors are open.

“I used to be a government teacher and Tim used to be a football coach for Bucyrus High School, so school organization sponsorships is something we’d be interested in,” Spitzer said.

“We believe wholeheartedly in community involvement. Both of us are going to be involved in the day-to-day operations and we want to use Scooter’s as a vehicle to support school and community organizations.”
