Jan Douglas Dick, age 94, of Shelby, died Monday night, July 15, 2024.
Jan was born October 7, 1929 in Shelby to the late Everett L. and Ava (Sipe) Dick. A 1947 graduate of Shelby High School, Jan was a veteran of the United States Army serving from 1953-1955. Prior to his service he married the former Mary Ann Walker on September 5, 1950 and together they enjoyed 55 years of marriage prior to her death on October 22, 2005.
Jan worked for 18 years as a telegraph operator for New York Central Railroad and after for various companies until retirement. For hobbies, Jan enjoyed hunting and thoroughly loved to golf. For many years, he worked at Shelby Country Club mowing grass and maintaining the property- a job that truly made him happy.
Behind the stoic, and mostly straight-faced, man with his tobacco pipe was a kind, witty, and caring man who loved his family and numerous friends and was sincerely proud of their accomplishments. Surviving are his son: Daniel E. Dick of Egg Harbor, NJ; grandchildren: Kathryn (Justin) Crane of Sandy, UT, Kelsey Dick of Charleston, SC, and David (Jayme) Dick of West Jordan, UT and their mother: Leslie Dick; great grandchildren: Kylie and Alexander Crane; beloved neighbors who watched over and cared for him: Rick and Bev Johnston, Greg and Stephanie Hummel, and Chris and Marlene Adkins; and numerous other relatives and friends including Sondra Shellman and nephew: Tom (Linda) Walker. In addition to his parents and beloved wife, Mary Ann, Jan was preceded in death by his sons: Dr. Michael Dick and infant, William Dick.
Family and friends are welcome on Saturday, July 20, 2024 from 10-11 am at the Penwell Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main Street, Shelby, where funeral services will immediately follow at 11 am with Rector Emeritus, Rev. David Sipes officiating. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery, Shelby with military honors conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Jan was a faithful supporter of Shelby Whippet athletics.
