MADISON TOWNSHIP — An 84-year-old Mansfield man was killed Tuesday afternoon in a one-vehicle accident in Madison Township, according to the Mansfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Ronald Scheurer was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Ashland Road near the eastbound entrance ramp to U.S. 30, according to the patrol.
Troopers said Scheurer was driving northeast on Ashland Road (U.S. 42), operating a 2024 Toyota RAV4 at 2:47 p.m.
His vehicle went off the right side of the road, through a gore and into a ditch,
before striking a culvert and a tree, according to the patrol.
In road and highway construction language, a gore is a triangular plot of land as designated when a road forks at the intersection with second road, or merges on and off from a larger one
The patrol was assisted by the Richland County Sheriff’s Office, Madison Township Fire & EMS, Richland County Coroner’s Office and Ronk’s Towing.
The crash remains under investigation, troopers said.
