James Michael “Mike” Greer, born May 13, 1994, in Mansfield, Ohio, passed away Friday, June 14, 2024, at Mercy Hospital in Lorain, Ohio, surrounded by his family after a prolonged illness. He was 30 years old.

We’ve all heard the phrase “sometimes it’s more about the journey than the destination.” This phrase aptly describes the life of James Michael “Mike” Greer, a person whose journey was cut short. In the brief time he was with us, he made a lasting impact on many lives and will never be forgotten. Mike was brimming with life – a unique spirit that only he could embody. His deep empathy for the overlooked, his passion for conspiracy theories that he would enthusiastically explain for hours, his profound connection with nature, his love for vintage cars (and his skill in restoring them), and his exceptional artistic and mechanical talents are just a few aspects of his legacy that we cherish. He was kind, compassionate, and giving. His friends and family will remember him as someone with a good story to tell you, a meal to share, and another set of hands to help you.

Michael is survived by his four-year-old son, Carter James Greer, who already shows signs of inheriting Mike’s handyman spirit and compassionate nature. Also left to cherish his memory are the mother of his child, Sarah Zellner; his loving grandparents, James “Tom” and Wanda Greer of Mansfield, who were like second parents to him and shared many cherished vacations with him; his mother, Elizabeth (Robert) Burks of Lexington; his father, James Greer Jr.; his sister, Jessica Greer, his biggest cheerleader; his loving partner, Jordan Shelton of Lorain, who held a special place in Mike’s heart and is deeply appreciated by the family; his niece and nephews, Ella, Cameron, and Damien Sweval, who enjoyed building Legos and going on adventures with their uncle; his aunt, Charla (Tim Bowman) of Mansfield; his uncle, Ted Carpenter of North Carolina; and cousins, Aaron and Eric (Hailee) Hamm and Samantha Carpenter.

Michael was preceded in death by his grandfather, James Carpenter; great-grandparents, Martha “Ellen” Greer and Clyde and Nila Perkins; cousin, Tammy Dollish; aunt, Linda “Joyce” Perkins; and uncles, Larry Perkins and Larry Greer.

Though Michael is no longer with us physically, his spirit lives in the stories he told and the lives he affected.

In honor of Mike’s memory, we kindly ask you to dress casually, as he would have wanted. He would have loved for all his friends and family to wear their favorite concert or band t-shirts to celebrate his life.
