John Michael Bissell passed away on Thursday, June 6, 2024 in his home surrounded by his family. He was 67.
He was born on July 21, 1956 to parents John and Shirley (Worthington) Bissell in Newark, Ohio. After John was graduated from Shelby High School with the class of 1975, he proudly served in the United States Navy.
On May 14, 2011, he married the love of his life Vanessa Steele and they shared 13 wonderful years of marriage together.
John was a phenomenal salesman, working at State Chemical and then the Share Corporation provided him with over 35 years of experience. He had a passion for teaching the Bible, and loved being a teacher to the Beit Ahavah Fellowship he and Vanessa hosted in their home for many years. His ministry also called him to volunteer at the Mansfield Correctional Institution, where he ministered to the inmates for over 10 years.
In his spare time, he took pleasure in playing and watching golf, cheering on the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns, and the Cleveland Cavaliers, as well as The Ohio State Buckeyes. When he was not watching sports, you could often find him studying and reading his Bible for hours on end. John was incredibly artistic and talented when it came to working with his hands, he could draw, paint, and build just about anything you could imagine. He also had a passion for music, even teaching himself how to play various instruments throughout life. But above all else, John cherished his family and seized every opportunity to spend time with them. He was a kind and gentle man who enjoyed a nice cigar, a glass of bourbon, and good company.
He is survived by his loving wife Vanessa Bissell, son Courtney “Jim” (Christy) Steele, grandchildren Brandon, Tyler, and Madilyn, siblings Gay (David) Wright, James Bissell, and Kipper (Mike) Studer, as well as many more extended family members and friends.
In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his sisters Jan Frazee and Kim Steele, and his beloved dog Buddy.
The Bissell family will receive friends on Monday, June 10, 2024 from noon to 2 pm in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where a funeral service honoring John’s life will begin immediately at 2 p.m. Celebrant Dave Roberts will speak. Burial will follow in Lexington Cemetery.
