MADISON TOWNSHIP — Madison Township trustees approved a bid package for summer road paving at Monday’s meeting.

Sarver Paving of Ashland submitted a bid of $310,197, which trustees voted to approve on Monday. This was about $40,000 under what the township has in the road fund, which includes carryover funds from last year.

Kokosing Construction and The Shelly Company also bid on the road package, which trustees opened in a special meeting on May 28.

In addition, Trustee Dan Fletcher presented ideas for a chip-and-seal program at the township’s last meeting that he said could cost around $100,000.

The township has until the end of 2024 to appropriate American Rescue Plan Act funds.

The township is paving and striping Home Road from Marion Avenue to Deer Park. Springfield Township shares part of Home Road, so Madison trustees will invoice Springfield for its share of the costs. Trustee Tom Craft said he expects to split costs about equally and invoice Springfield for around $35,000.

Bentwood Court was also bid out separately due to it needing 1.5 inches of asphalt for part of the road and 2.5 inches at the cul-de-sac. All other roads on the list will receive 1.5 inches of asphalt.

The road portions add up to about 3.8 total miles.

The other sections of roads on the paving list include:

  • Burger Avenue from Longview Avenue north to the dead end
  • Walker Road from Burger Avenue west to Belmont Avenue
  • Benedict Avenue from Longview Avenue to the dead end

The project is estimated for an April 2025 completion after final design plans and documents are submitted this fall. The engineering contract includes a survey of the construction site, hydraulic calculations and construction plans. Trustees previously approved a measure to allocate up to $150,000 of American Rescue Plan Act funds for the project.
  • Trustees hired Tim Romoser for summer road department work at a May 25 special meeting. He started work assisting the road department on Monday. Trustees also approved a budget reappropriation of $9,496 for salary and insurance costs for Romoser’s position through Sept. 1.
