“Let me tell you a story,” were the familiar words that ushered in countless conversations with Betty. Her voice was a warm invitation to join her in the tapestry of memories she wove so effortlessly. With each tale she spun, she painted vivid pictures of love, memories, and the simple joys of life.

Betty Schag’s story that lasted 92 years on this earth ended Tuesday, May 14, 2024, but her story in heaven has now only just begun.

She was born November 10, 1931 to parents Clarence & Kathryn (Hartman) Oakes in Mansfield. Betty went to St. Peters School and graduated from Mansfield Senior High with the class of 1949.

On January 9, 1954, she married Michael A. Schag and they shared 56 wonderful years of marriage until he passed away on March 2, 2010. Now they are together again.

She worked at the Richland County Court House for 4 years in the Clerk of Courts for Howard Wenning. She also worked as a bookkeeper for many years for her husband, owner of Schag’s Counter Tops. She also worked for H&R Block for 10 years and then volunteered at AARP for 12 years.

She was a farm wife and enjoyed everything from gardening flowers as well as vegetables. She made sure the family had everything they needed and the table was always full at mealtimes with food from the farm. She was thoughtful and generous, shopping all year long to find birthday and Christmas gifts for every member of her family so they knew she was thinking of them.

She is survived by sons Rick (Patty) Schag and Tom Schag; daughters Shirley (Mike) Hill, Kathy Shaw and Lori (Steve) Henry; grandchildren Cara Shaw, Shannon (Jordan) Oyster, Chelsea (Kelly Carr) Shaw, Kendra (Jared) Meyer, Casity Schag, Jeffery (Lisa) Myers, Elizabeth Myers, Aaron (Taylor) Hill, Matthew (Katie) Hill and Haley Schag; great-grandchildren Kenley Meyer, Atley Meyer, Milley Meyer, Ryker Carr, Ava Carr, Reese Shaw, Bexley Oyster, Baylor Oyster, Blake Oyster, Creighton Hill, Briston Hill, Elaina Myers, Emmett Myers, Lily Myers, Forrest Myers, John Myers and one great-grandchild on the way; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her loving husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; daughter Carol Eileen Myers; brothers Delmar Oakes, Paul Oakes, Bob Oakes and James Oakes.

The Schag family will receive friends Sunday, May 19, 2024 from 1-3 p.m. in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home. An active member of Resurrection Parish in Lexington, a Funeral Mass honoring Betty’s life will be held Monday, May 20th beginning at 11 a.m. at Resurrection Parish.
