Butler: Helen A. Vernon, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother peacefully passed away at her residence and went to be with the Lord on April 27th, 2024.

She was born on May 13th, 1963 in Nelsonville, OH to the late James and Georgia Williams.

Helen spent her early and teen years playing outside with her sister Andrea and being a tomboy. She loved playing softball and anything else that would get her outside. She collected rocks, rode bikes and spent time with her family.

Helen and her husband Loren met while working at Ames Department store and were married in March of 1989. They gave birth to their first child Stephanie on August 31st 1990 and 19 months later their son Seth. Helen stayed home with her children for several years and homeschooled her two children while Loren worked.

Helen was always very frugal, making sure their bills were paid, even when money was tight and saved for the small luxuries she could afford for her family. She worked for several years as a teller and was an instrumental part in her son Seth’s banking career. She was always someone you could count on to be a prayer warrior in times of need or to just be someone those close to her went to for advice.

Helen and her husband, Loren, attended River of Life Church for over 30 years. She was the director of children’s ministries at River of Life church for many years and served as the church secretary for 16 years. Helen always had a heart for giving, volunteering for church events and events in her community in an effort to share her love for Jesus. Helen always had a servant’s heart and loved participating in dance ministries, Vacation Bible School and the Friday night events that were an outreach opportunity for the community.

Helen and Loren loved spending time with their children and grandchildren. Some of their favorite activities were taking day trips to Lake Erie, going for hikes at Mohican, or having a picnic. She was always supportive of the sports her children played, taking them to every practice and game, jokingly calling herself the “family taxi”. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren try out different sports camps and was always right there cheering them on.

Her love for her family was evident in everything she did, making sure her husband, children and grandchildren were cared for even during difficult times. She was an avid lover of nature and animals, even saving a turtle in the middle of the street once. Helen loved spending her time cuddled up in a blanket and a cat or two on her lap, sharing a movie with her family.

In 2021, Helen went through treatment for breast cancer and won her initial battle. This allowed her to spend more quality time with her family and gave her the chance to watch her son Seth get married in February of 2023 to his wife Katy. Ultimately, the cancer did come back in 2024 and rather than put her body through more pain, she chose to spend her last weeks with her family, telling stories, laughing with her loved ones, and showered in her family’s love.

Helen is survived by her daughter Stephanie (Sheldon) McCoy of Butler, Son Seth (Katy) Vernon, of Canal Winchester; her grandchildren Conner, Chloe and Cooper McCoy; her sister Andrea Derenberger of Mt. Vernon. She was preceded in death by her parents James and Georgia Williams, mother and father in law Jack and Martha Vernon and her beloved husband Loren.

Friends may call Friday, May 10th, 2024 from 4-6 PM at the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home where a celebration of life service honoring Helen will follow at 6 PM. Their dear family friend and brother in Christ; Joseph Barber will speak. Helen and Loren will be laid to rest together at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens at a later date.
