MADISON TOWNSHIP — Two teenage boys caused a commotion Thursday after entering a school they didn’t attend through a side door.

Staff at Madison Comprehensive High School became aware of the pair at around 12:35 p.m., according to a notice sent out by the district.

“They were student-age, but they were not our students,” Supt. Rob Peterson said. “Fortunately there was no ill intent on their part. They came to speak with one of our students whom they had recently met.”

Peterson said the two entered through an exterior door that hadn’t closed fully and thus hadn’t latched.

“We definitely know nobody propped it open or anything like that,” he said. “We believe that somebody used it and it just did not latch tightly.”

Peterson said the district has already taken “corrective action” to fix the door and will take some additional cautionary measures going forward.

“We’re going to look at every exterior door in the district to ensure that they’re all working properly and we’ll continue to inspect those on a monthly basis,” he said. “We take our school security and safety very seriously. This is very concerning to us.”

Peterson said the boys were apprehended by Richland County Sheriff deputies and will be charged with trespassing.
