Gordon W. Conrad, 88 of Ashland passed away on Wednesday morning, April 24, 2024 in University Hospital Samaritan Regional Health System.
He was born on June 23, 1935 in Ashland, Ohio to J. Vernon and Bernice (Wiley) Conrad.
Conrad graduated in 1953 from Ashland High School. He served in the US Army active duty from 1955 to 1958. He then served from 1958 to 1981 in the Army active reserves. After his service to our country, Conrad attended Ashland College and graduated in 1967 with a Bachelors degree in Business Management.
He began his professional career as a bookkeeper at Ashland Bank & Savings (now Chase Bank) and became Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. He retired from banking in 1996.
After retiring, Gordon became very active in Veterans affairs. He was the Finance Officer at the American Legion in Ashland. Driving veterans to VA clinics in Cleveland, Canton, Akron and Mansfield was something he truly enjoyed. He served as treasurer of the Ashland County Joint Veterans Council and for over 50 years, served the Ashland County Fair by assisting in the finance office and served as Fair Board Treasurer for two years. He also served as Treasurer for the Ashland County Sports Hall of Fame for several years.
He was a life member of Amvets, member of American Legion Post #88 and Ashland Elks Lodge #1360.
Conrad was preceded in death by his parents and loving wife Cathleen (Kay) Conrad.
He is survived by 9 children; 14 grandchildren; a daughter-in-law; a sister-in-law; four great grandchildren; and his brother Alan.
An interment service will be held on Friday, June 7, 2024 at 1:15 pm in the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. A Celebration of Gordon’s life will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2024 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Harry Higgins Post 88 of the American Legion.
