John Hall Carlisle, aged 84, of Ashland, Ohio, passed away on April 2, 2024, surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with the complications of Parkinson’s disease.
John was born on August 14, 1939, to the late Paul and Mollie (nee Hall) Carlisle in Ashland. He graduated from Ashland High School in 1957 and Ashland College in 1961 with degrees in Accounting and Comprehensive Social Studies.
John met his wife, Deena Sulinsky, in his 10th grade algebra class and they shared 70 years together.
From an early age he loved all things athletic and coached football, baseball, basketball and softball in addition to his 39 years of teaching. When retiring from teaching, he could be found coaching the basketball and baseball teams of his grandchildren and following his grandson’s golf matches.
In his retirement, he traveled extensively with his family in Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and the British Isles. When the grandchildren grew up and graduated from college, he then could be found collecting Lionel Trains, running train shows and attending gatherings of train collectors across the United States as an Officer of the Train Collectors’ Association.
John is survived by his wife, Deena Carlisle of Ashland; two daughters, Ann Tobias and Caren Carlisle; four grandchildren, Samantha (Adam) Knipfer, Drake Tobias, Alexandria Carlisle Dye and Celsey Carlisle Dye; and one brother, Richard (Patricia) Carlisle of Shelby.
In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by a son-in-law, Sonny Tobias who passed away on September 14, 2022; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Sigismund and Eileen Sulinsky.
John will be laid to rest in a private family interment ceremony in the Ashland Cemetery.
