MANSFIELD: Alvin Ross Carver passed away on Monday, April 1, 2024, following a long illness. He was 93.

Alvin was born in Mansfield on July 16, 1930 to Virgil and Ester Mae Carver. He graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1950, before serving in the United States Army. He proudly served our country as a military policeman stateside.

After discharge from the armed forces, he worked for Hartman Electric as a truck driver. While he enjoyed his time on the road, his position at Hartman Electric also provided him the opportunity to meet the love of his life, Helen, whom he married on November 1, 1958. He had a variety of driving positions, including Blue Bird Baking Company and Frito Lay. His favorite job came in retirement, as a driver for the local Amish community. He delighted in chauffeuring jobs as they allowed time for traveling different places and human connection after the passing of Helen in 1996.

He is preceded in death by wife Helen and son Ross, as well as six of his siblings.
He is survived in love and memory by his remaining two children Joyce (Bob Taylor) Harding and Thomas Carver; grandchildren Diana Wise, Steven (Tawonia) Harding, and Phillip (Laura) Carver; great-grandchildren Dominic Harding, Starlette (Kevin) Hilliard, and Cole and Lincoln Wise; a great-great granddaughter Athena Hilliard; and siblings Wanda Bridges, Bob (Diz) Carver, and Jeannette Stitt.

Alvin is remembered by those who loved him for his sharp and bawdy wit and ornery yet creative spirit. When not spinning ribald jokes, he could be found at the loom instead spinning textile artworks, primarily rugs. Dexterous and crafty, he enjoyed woodworking as well, making fine pieces for the home, both functional and decorative. Those who benefitted from his talents cherish him as their beloved “Mr. Fix-It.” Equally creative in the kitchen as in the woodshop, he also enjoyed cooking adventurous meals. When not producing beautiful and delicious things, Alvin could be found enjoying the peace of wild things; he always saw the beauty and sanctity in the natural world. Although he was a man of many talents, his loving family brought him the greatest fulfillment and enjoyment in his life.

The family will host calling hours Tuesday, April 9, 2024 from 4-7 pm in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home. A funeral service with military honors by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Squad will be held Wednesday, at 11 am at the funeral home. Celebrant Jerry Wilson will speak and burial will follow in Zion Four Corners Cemetery near Butler.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Joyce Harding, with the intention of using the funds for a commemorative activity of the family’s choice for his great grandchildren.
