MANSFIELD — A 16-year-old Mansfield youth died Wednesday from a gunshot wound(s), according to Mansfield police, who labeled the incident as a homicide.

It would be the city’s second homicide in the last five days.

Officers responded to 67 E. Chestnut St. at approximately 2:02 p.m. after receiving a 911 call that a shooting had occurred, according to a press release from police Capt. Randy Carver.

“Upon arrival, Mansfield police officers located a 16-year-old victim inside the residence with what appeared to be a gunshot wound(s),” Carver said.

The identity of the victim was not released Wednesday evening.

The victim was transported to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital by the Mansfield Fire Department.

He was pronounced dead at 2:48 p.m., according to Bob Ball, the chief investigator for the Richland County Coroner’s Office.

Ball said the victim’s body will be transported to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy.

Carver said an investigation is ongoing. Crime scene tape remained around the residence late Wednesday afternoon.

The street was blocked at Hammond Avenue and Altamont Avenue.

“Detectives are working to find out what led to the shooting death, as well as to identify a suspect(s),” Carver said.

“Details are very limited as this is an active and fluid investigation. Additional details will be released once they are available,” the captain said.

Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to call Det. Ronnie Swisher at 419-755-9432.

The death follows on the heels of the Saturday morning shooting death of David Gibson, 25, who was identified by Ball.

Officers responded to 423 Spring St. at approximately 1:49 a.m. after a report of a shooting was called in, according to the MPD.

No arrests have been made stemming from that shooting death.
