Eleanor “Sue” Steiner passed away Thursday, March 14, 2024, at Bridging Life Dove House in Westminster, Maryland. She was born on February, 13, 1930 to the late Mark A. and Pauline K. (Atwood) Menke in Kokomo, Indiana. Her family moved to the Mansfield, Ohio area while she was in grade school. She remained in the area until she re-married in 1966, and moved back to Kokomo, Indiana. The family moved west a few years later, eventually settling in the Idaho panhandle.

After her children were grown, she took up residence in a few different cities in the Pacific Northwest, the last of which was in the Seattle-Tacoma area of Washington state. She then moved to Carroll County in Maryland to be near her eldest daughter, Melody. As she progressed into her 90’s, she moved into a nursing home. Following a brief illness, she was moved to the hospice in Westminster, Maryland.

As a young person, Sue enjoyed horseback riding, ice cream socials, and helping on the family farm. She was active in the local Church of the Brethren. She enjoyed singing at church, as well as other musical activities.

Upon becoming a homemaker, Sue enjoyed baking, particularly sour cream cookies, and she was an excellent seamstress. Gardening and keeping a spotless kitchen helped keep her busy. After moving to Maryland, she enjoyed several visits to Gettysburg National Military Park, as well as the nation’s capital in Washington D.C.

Most important to Sue was raising her children according to her Christian beliefs. Additionally, she emphasized being independent, while always being thoughtful and considerate of others. When she became unable to attend church on her own, she enjoyed listening to Dr. Charles Stanley.

She is survived by her three children: Melody Gerlach of Manchester, MD, Melinda McClellan of Tallahassee, FL, and Michael Steiner of Long Beach, CA; a nephew, Mark Menke III of Harrisburg, PA; five grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 29, 2024, at Wappner Funeral Directors-Mansfield, 98 S. Diamond St, Mansfield, OH 44902.
