MANSFIELD β Wrestlingβs second season began last week, but things will get really interesting this weekend.
District tournaments around the state begin Friday and culminate when state berths are determined Saturday afternoon. The top four finishers in each weight division at the district tournaments qualify for the state tournament.
North central Ohio is traditionally well-represented at the state meet and this year should be no different. Hereβs what to expect this weekend:
Division I
Ashland won the Avon Lake sectional last week and will send 10 wrestlers to the Perrysburg district.
Freshmen Mason Bauer (106) and Guardian Miller (126) both won sectional titles, while Cooper Smith (190) and Cayden Spotts (215) were runners-up. Spotts is a two-time state qualifier.
Mount Vernon finished second at the Newark sectional and advanced six wrestlers to the Hilliard Darby district.
That group includes sectional champs Brock Blankenhorn (113), Mavrik Gregory (144), Alex Taylor (215) and Luke Mullins (285). A sophomore, Taylor finished third at state at 215 last year.
Division II
The Norwalk district tournament is traditionally a slugfest and this year will be no different.
Ontario won the Clyde sectional last week, with six individuals claiming sectional titles. That group included Aiden Ohl (106), Jacob Ohl (113), Mason Turnbaugh (138), Dylan Floyd (175), Landon Sowards (190) and Landon Campbell (215).
Aiden Ohl is the projected state champ at 106 while older brother Jacob is a projected state finalist at 113.
Galion boasts a pair of sectional champs in Gradey Harding (120) and Alex Griffith (285).
Meanwhile, Clear Fork was runner-up at the Sandusky sectional and boasted a pair of sectional champs in Hezekiah Molina (106) and Peyton Hoskins (132). Madisonβs Mike Thomas won a sectional championship at 120.
Division III
Crestview will send seven wrestlers to the Rossford district, including sectional champ and projected state champ Caleb Cunningham (285).
Plymouth had a pair of sectional champs in Cameron Wagers (120) and Noah Robinson (215).
Mapletonβs Brock Durbin, the Division III state runner-up at 144 pounds last year and a projected state finalist, is the provisional favorite to win a district title at Independence.
Centerburg, Fredericktown and East Knox all had individual champs at the Ridgedale sectional who will be in the hunt for state berths this weekend at the Heath district
Fredericktownβs Trent Rooke (126), Centerburgβs Christopher Marshall (138) and East Knoxβs Blake Elliott (190) all won sectional crowns at Ridgedale last week and will head to the Heath district Friday.
