LEXINGTON: It’s with immense sadness that we announce that Michele “Shelly” Marie (Baxter) Layman peacefully passed away on Sunday, February 18, 2024 after a courageous 16-month fight with cancer.

Shelly was born to Mary Jane (France) and Floyd Baxter on June 19, 1968.

Shelly had such a positive impact on everyone around her as a wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. She was the beautiful and beloved wife of 30 years with Dave Layman and the admired mother of daughters, Marissa and Sophia, whom she was so proud of and absolutely adored.

Shelly earned her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education at the University of Dayton in 1990. After graduation she moved to Atlanta, GA where she taught 3rd grade for two years. After moving to Akron, OH in 2002 and getting married, she taught at a private school for a year before teaching 3rd grade in the Revere School System in Richfield, OH for 8 years. Shelly took some time off to start her family. After making the move with her husband to Lexington, OH Shelly was eager to start teaching again and most recently completed 20 years teaching elementary education with Goal Digital Academy.

Shelly enjoyed spending as much time as possible with her family, working on puzzles, caring for her dogs, and especially loved playing games with her family (and usually won!). Going on vacations and exposing her daughters to new experiences was quite special and important to Shelly. These moments have left countless beautiful and cherished memories with her family.

Shelly was a generous, kind, and nurturing woman who was loved immensely and was adored by her students and their parents, friends, coworkers, and especially her family. Shelly always had a positive attitude, a smile on her face, and always looked for the silver lining in any setbacks or adversity. She was a glowing and positive influence on everyone she met, worked with, or taught.

Shelly is survived by her husband Dave and daughters Marissa and Sophia. She is also survived by her brother, Frank Baxter, and sister, Debbie Wilks.

Shelly will be greatly missed by her loving family and friends.

A memorial gathering will be held Friday, March 1, 2024 from 3-6 pm in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where her memorial service will begin at 6 pm. Father Kevin Moebius will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kobacker House.
