MANSFIELD — Shakira, a 3-year-old female terrier-mix dog, was adopted on Saturday, Feb. 17 after spending 368 days at the Humane Society of Richland County.
“This adoption was a long time coming,” said Linda Chambers, Managing Director. “While the animals in our care have an unlimited amount of time that they can stay with us, we prefer to see them in loving homes where they belong.
“There were a lot of happy tears on Saturday.”
The Humane Society was alerted to a possible dog abandonment case in February 2023 involving dogs that had been left behind after their owners moved.
Humane Agents removed Shakira, along with two other adult dogs that were left in an abandoned home.
The two other dogs were adopted fairly quickly. Shakira’s stay was much, much longer.
Finally three days after Shakira’s 1-year anniversary in the shelter, she was adopted.
“So many stories that come from animal shelters involve sad situations,” Chambers said. “It’s so refreshing when we have really happy news to share, especially for such a loving girl.”
Board President Candace Lybarger agreed.
“To see Shakira finally find her home gives such joy to all those who know and love her,” Lybarger said. “There is no better feeling when we finally connect a person with their new best friend.
“This was certainly the case.”
