GREENWICH – The Monroeville wrestling team is getting better and better at winning Firelands Conference Championships.

On Saturday, the Eagles stretched their title streak to three straight years, blowing by runner-up Plymouth, 207-121, for the first FC three-peat since Crestview’s run of five in a row from 2007 through 2011.

It was much more of a runaway than Monroeville’s 155-144 triumph over Plymouth in 2022, and the Eagles were a 170-5-155.5 winner over Crestview last year.

Plymouth had a quartet of matmen make championship bouts Saturday and featured a pair of winners in eighth-ranked Cam Wagers at 120 and Noah Robinson at 215.

Wagers topped Mapleton’s Chase Sword, 8-2, while Robinson put together a pin of Monroeville’s Hayden Ryan in 4:28 after a pin in just 26 seconds in the semifinals.

Also for the Big Red, Ben Trimmer had the unfortunate task of taking on second-ranked Casper Caizzo of St. Paul at 132. Caizzo, a 2022 state champion, became the 15th four-time FC champ with a 12-2 triumph.

At 175 for Plymouth, Jackson Kennison logged a pin in the semifinals before he fell by pin to Monroeville’s Benjamin Seitz in 1:40.

The Cougars ended up third on Saturday in their first FC Championships under head coach Nate Godsey, collecting 108 points while advancing three wrestlers into title matches.

The story of Crestview’s day came from No. 1-ranked Division III heavyweight Caleb Cunningham. The senior, who recently committed to play football at Walsh University, collected his 100th career win with a pin of Monroeville’s Brycen Dunlap in 1:38.

Cunningham’s other match was a 43-second pin, and he was named the Most Valuable Wrestler in the upper weights after winning his third FC title.

Crestview’s other crown was at 126 with freshman Qwintin Howard, who edged Monroeville’s Colt Clark in a 4-0 overtime decision after a semifinals pin.

Also making his way to a championship bout for CHS was Jaden Hedrick at 150. He dropped a 14-7 decision to Monroeville’s Landin Hershiser after a 14-2 major decision in the semifinals.

Mapleton, meanwhile, featured the other big story of the day in senior Brock Durbin, who earlier in the week committed to wrestle at Ashland University.

Ranked second in the state at 144, he narrowly edged No. 9-ranked Landen Roeder of Monroeville, 3-1 in overtime, logging a takedown after Roeder had sent it to OT with an escape.

Durbin earlier ran away with tech falls of 16-1 and 19-4, and took home Most Valuable Wrestler honors in the lower weights.

Also of note, Monroeville’s Ashton Homan, a 2023 state champ, followed Caizzo at 138, becoming the 16th four-time FC champ.
