SHELBY – The Shelby City Schools Board of Education has a new president for the first time in eight years.

Scott Rose was elected president by his fellow school board members Monday, replacing Lorie White, who spent 16 years on the board and eight as president.

Kim Nadolsky was elected to serve as the board’s vice president.

Additionally, Monday marked the first meeting for recently-elected school board members Heather Braun and Brad Ream.

New president is no stranger to school board

Rose began on the board in 2014 and said his knowledge has grown significantly over the past 10 years.

Since his election to the board, Rose said the landscape of the Shelby City Schools campus has changed dramatically, including the construction of a new high school, pre-K to 8th grade building and athletic complex.

“This campus has totally changed in a lot of good ways,” he said. “I think there’s a lot of good things, not just from an academic and athletic (standpoint), but from a safety standpoint.”

Rose said he’s been fortunate to have served with many good people and is proud of the district’s current personnel and financial state.

“I always say I’ll put those guys (district staff) up against any district in the state of Ohio or in the country,” he said. “But we also have good people in our community as well, so that makes it easier.”

‘Always a great day to be a Whippet’ says Rose

Continuing to build on the momentum and accomplishments of the district is a top priority for Rose.

Another goal on his list is furthering his relationship with first-year Superintendent Michael Browning.

“I’m excited (for) what 2024 and beyond brings,” he said. “I think there’s a lot of good things here. Just keep on continuing to do what we do, that’s my goal.”

Rose said he still views himself as a community member first, as well as a proud parent of two Whippet alums.

“Both my kids came through Shelby,” he said. “I have nothing but great things to say and I just love giving back to this community. There’s a lot of good things to say and good things that are going on in our community.”

Board of Education recognizes Shelby yearbook staff

In other action Monday, school board members recognized the Shelby High School yearbook staff, whose 2023 Scarlet S yearbook was named to the Walsworth Gallery of Excellence, a national achievement.

Advisor Katie Will and Shelby High School senior Alexis Booker attended Monday’s meeting and discussed the award-winning work.

“We found out about this award at the beginning of this school year,” Will said. “We were pleasantly surprised because we did not apply in any of the yearbook contests.”

Will said the 2023 yearbook, which was themed vintage, was important because it captured the final game played at W.W. Skiles Field, the district’s former football stadium, as well as the first game at the newly-constructed Whippet Athletic Complex.

The yearbook’s cover paid homage to the iconic stadium, which fit the vintage theme of the 2023 edition, she said.

“We used a lot of high-contrast, black and white, so it kind of looked like yearbooks of long ago, but with a modern feel to it,” Will said. “We really wanted to highlight great quality pictures of our student body.”

Booker said her yearbook class enjoys covering all activities around the high school, including the arts, academics and athletics.

“We try to at least get everybody in the yearbook at least once,” she said.

“It’s fun for the kids to go around, take pictures of their classmates and get the quotes from them and stuff.”
