UPDATED AT 7:37 P.M. The Ohio State Highway Patrol issued a press release updating information on this crash.

MANSFIELD — A fatal, one-vehicle crash took place on Friday along I-71 in Richland County, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The deceased individual’s name, nor any other details about the incident, have been released by authorities at the time of publication.

Fatal crash

The Ohio Department of Transportation and State Highway Patrol blocked two lanes of traffic following the crash on I-71 north near the 174 mile marker.

ODOT reported at 2:54 p.m. that I-71 northbound, just north of Ohio 39 in Richland County, was reduced to one lane due to a crash. The interstate was reopened to full access at 4:38 p.m.

The Patrol stated the crash occurred at 12:40 p.m. when a 2006 Mack dump truck hauling gravel experienced a suspected front tire blow out. The vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway striking the guardrail before overturning and traveled down an embankment. The truck became engulfed in flames from the impact. The unidentified male driver sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash.

Richland County ODOT, Auer’s Towing, Richland County Coroner’s office, Madison and Mifflin Fire and EMS all assisted at the scene.

The crash remains under further investigation at this time.
