DANVILLE — Hillsdale had not one but two chances to win in the final moments of Friday night’s thrilling Division VII, Region 25 quarterfinal football game at Danville. But the Falcons came up short both times in a heartbreaking 42-41 defeat.
The Falcons fell behind 21-0 in the first quarter, but unleashed a remarkable rally to claw within 35-21 at halftime. Coach Trevor Cline’s club tied the game at 35-35 heading to the fourth period.
In a frantic finish, Hillsdale’s Jake Hoverstock scored on a 6-yard scamper to pull his team within a 42-41 margin. But Cline elected to go for two and the potential win, and the conversion pass sailed incomplete.
Still, the Falcons recovered the ensuing onside kick, and promptly drove deep into Danville territory. But a 35-yard field goal attempt fell short to finish the game.
Hoverstock threw for 188 yards and a TD and added 59 yards rushing and two more scores. He compiled 247 yards of total offense and three TDs. Teammate Owen Sloan collected 121 yards on 12 carries, while Braylen Jarvis had 94 yards on six catches with a pair of touchdowns.
Danville (10-2), seeded third in Region 25, will face 10th-seeded Lucas (6-6) next Saturday night in the regional semifinals. The game will be played at a neutral site to-be-determined.
Hillsdale, the sixth seed in the region, completed its campaign with a 7-5 mark.
