JEROMESVILLE — Hillsdale evened its record and stung conference rival Dalton in the process with a 27-12 win during Friday night’s Wayne County Athletic League fracas in Jeromesville.
Falcons’ quarterback Jake Hoverstock ran for 136 yards, including a 49-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to put the game away. He also passed for 95 yards, including a 5-yard TD strike to David Parker to push Hillsdale in front 7-0 with 5:12 showing in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs climbed to within 7-6 on Greyson Siders’ 1-yard plunge early in the second period.
Braylen Jarvis countered for the Falcons with a 9-yard scoring run to make it 13-6. Max Vesper’s 6-yard TD run with just 27 seconds left in the half pushed the gap out to 20-6 at intermission.
Siders ripped off a 65-yard touchdown dash to slice the deficit to 20-12, but Hoverstock’s bolt finished it.
Hillsdale’s statistical advantage was built through its pounding ground attack. The Falcons ran for 265 yards, compared to 164 for the Bulldogs. Dalton threw for 129 yards, while the home team managed 95. Hillsdale had the edge in first downs (18-13) and total yards (360-293).
The Falcons (3-3 overall, 2-1 in the WCAL) travel to Smithville next week.
Dalton (4-2, 2-1) hosts Northwestern on Friday.
