NORTH ROBINSON — He has his team on the doorstep of the Final Four for the first time in program history and Colonel Crawford’s Mason Studer has more reason to celebrate.
A senior point guard, Studer was selected the Northwest District Player of the Year in Division III, sharing the award with Ottawa-Glandorf’s Colin White and Pemberville Eastwood’s Jacob Meyer.
Colonel Crawford (26-0) will play Ottawa-Glandorf for the regional championship Saturday afternoon at Bowling Green State University’s Stroh Center.
The 5-foot-11 Studer averaged 18 points a game and led the Northern 10 Athletic Conference in assists at 5.7 a game. He was selected the District 6 Player of the Year in Division III.
Colonel Crawford’s Carter Valentine and Wynford’s Jaron Filliater were second team picks. Valentine, an Ashland University recruit, averaged 17.6 points a game while Filliater was good for 15.5 points a night.
Crestview’s Owen Barker was a third-team pick. The 6-foot-3 junior averaged 11 points a game for the Cougars.
Honorable-mention selections included Colonel Crawford’s Braxton Baker and Nolan McKibben, Crestview’s Heath Kash and Jarek Ringler, Bucyrus’ Malachi Bayless and Wynford’s Sam McMillan.
Crestview girls coach Amy Bays was selected the Northwest District Coach of the Year after leading the Cougars to their third straight Firelands Conference crown. Bays shared the award with Delphos Jefferson’s Denise Lindeman.
Colonel Crawford’s Kaylyn Risner was a second-team pick. The senior averaged 16.5 points a game.
Crestview’s Mary Leeper was a third-team in Division III. The versatile 5-foot-8 senior was good for 9.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists a game.
Honorable-mention picks included Crestview’s Emma Aumend and Anna McFarland, Colonel Crawford’s Allison Weithman and Bucyrus’ Madalyn Kimmel.
