HAYESVILLE — Four adults from Mansfield were treated for injuries Tuesday after crashing in the Village of Hayesville following a terminated high-speed chase on U.S. Route 30.
Sgt. C.O. Smith of the Wooster post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said one of his troopers tried to stop the black 2004 Dodge Durango traveling west on Route 30 after clocking the SUV at 115 mph around 2:45 p.m.
“(The driver) was also passing on the right,” Smith said. “So our supervisor terminated the pursuit because it was getting too dangerous.”
Around 10 minutes later, at 2:55 p.m., the 21-year-old driver of the Dodge crashed along Main Street, causing the vehicle to catch fire. Area agencies, including Ashland Fire, responded.
Smith said the driver, who he declined to identify pending charges, has an outstanding warrant for his arrest.
Smith said all four occupants of the SUV were then transported to an area hospital to be treated for non life-threatening injuries.
Authorities found two firearms in the crashed Dodge. Smith did not offer further comment because the crash is still under investigation.
Smith said the Dodge’s speed was initially reported to have reached speeds of 150 mph, but that that is false.
“It must have been misheard over the scanner,” he said. “But still, traveling at 115 or 150 miles an hour isn’t going to make a huge difference in how dangerous that is.”
