MANSFIELD — Mansfield police will be targeting high crash areas in the city, with a focus on drunk driving, distracted driving and driving without seat belts from Dec. 24 to Jan. 1, the chief announced Thursday.

The High Visibility Traffic Enforcement program is federally funded through a grant, Mansfield police Chief Keith Porch said in the release. The news release did not say which specific areas of the city will be targeted.

As travel ramps up in the area, the Mansfield police’s traffic section said so do the chances of crashes.

“The possibility of inclement weather adds stress to the task of driving, many times causing a lapse in concentration,” Porch said.

The police department offered motorists the following reminders:

• Don’t drink and drive. Don’t allow someone who has been drinking to drive, and don’t ride with someone who has been drinking.

• If a friend has been drinking, take the keys and call a cab or ride service.

• If you see someone who is driving impaired, report it by calling 419-522-1234 or 911 for emergencies.

• Do not text and drive. Driving requires full attention to your surroundings for the safety of all on the roadway.

• Drive responsibly. A moment lapse could result in a lifetime of regret.

• Make sure everyone is buckled up. Every time, all the time.
