MADISON TOWNSHIP — Faith Kuhn’s career night couldn’t have come at a better time.
A 6-foot-1 senior post, Kuhn scored a career-high 24 points as Madison rallied for a 38-34 win over Ashland in Ohio Cardinal Conference action Thursday at Madison Middle School.
The Rams (3-2 overall, 2-0 in the Ohio Cardinal Conference) trailed 25-18 late in the third quarter before Kuhn came to life. She scored on a layup with 1:40 remaining in the period to make it 25-20, then registered an offensive rebound and putback to make it 25-22 with 1:14 showing.
Ashland closed the quarter on a 5-2 run to take a 30-24 advantage to the final eight minutes, but wouldn’t score again until 4:15 remained in the game. By that time Kuhn was in the midst of a personal 11-point run. She scored 11 of Madison’s 14 points in the period.
“The first half was a little bit rough. I was missing a lot of shots,” said Kuhn, who will play volleyball at Shawnee State next year. “I started to make a few shots in the fourth quarter and then I made some free throws and that helped.
“We could feel the momentum shift in our favor in the fourth quarter.”
Ashland (1-5, 1-1) led 32-30 midway through the fourth quarter, but Kuhn pulled the Rams even with a layup with 4:01 remaining. She then connected on 5 of 6 free throws during the next three minutes as the Rams opened a 37-32 gap.
“It was a matter of Faith wanting the basketball and our guards getting it to her,” Madison coach Brian Davis said. “We have been guard-heavy in the past, but now our focus has turned to the post.
“When Faith decides she wants the basketball, she is a load underneath. She took care of business.”
Kuhn scored 19 of Madison’s 26 second-half points. The Rams outscored the Arrows 26-16 after the break.
“They just had more energy than us,” Ashland coach Renee Stimpert said. “They had more fight and they had more effort.
“We feel like this is a game we could have won, but we will learn from it.”
Lillian Pool led the Arrows with 10 points. Cerena Miller added eight.
Madison had seven other players score in addition to Kuhn, but none of them scored more than three points.
