MANSFIELD — The Mansfield Art Center presents two exhibitions opening Sunday, August 15. The Ohio Designer Craftsmen’s “Best of 2020 – 2021” and Michael A. Wasemann Paintings 1950 – 2010.
The Ohio Designer Craftsmen’s “Best of 2020-2021” will showcase contemporary fine craft by 60 Ohio Designer Craftsmen members through Oct. 10 in the Elizabeth T. Black Gallery.
Juror Susan Ewing, the Director of Cranbrook Academy of Art in Detroit, selected 75 works in clay, glass, metal, wood, fiber, and mixed media by 60 artists. Sixteen artists received awards of excellence in the 37th annual members competition, organized by Ohio Designer Craftsmen.
Funding for this exhibition is provided by Taylor Metal Products in Mansfield and the Ohio Arts Council.
“The works in the exhibition incorporate the hand, the machine, and the digital processes that nourish each other and offer new tools, materials, and means for creating not only contemporary narratives but also innovation,” Ewing said. “Craft is more than making beautiful things, although we need beauty and poetry in our daily lives.
“Contemporary craft is also a disruptor, a form of social activism and visual expression.”
The Foundation Gallery will feature paintings by Michael A. Wasemann 1950 to 2010 thru Sept. 12.
“Mike was a consistent presence in exhibitions at the Mansfield Art Center, winning numerous honors and awards,” The Mansfield Art Center stated in a press release. “Having received his degree in Fine Art from The Ohio State University, Mike went about the business of finding his creative path.
“Along with his graphic arts business, as an accomplished and prolific classical artist, Mike was able to develop an enthusiastic audience for his fine art as well. We are honored to have Mike’s work again grace the Foundation Gallery walls.”
The Mansfield Art Center will host a reception for these exhibitions on Sunday, Aug. 29 from 2 to 4 p.m.
