This summer, Richland Academy of the Arts takes back the summer with their new and returning summer classes and workshops from June through August.
Jacy Warrick will be teaching two classes and one workshop. Each of her classes caters to different demographics. Her Creativity and Connection Class will be for families ages 3 and up and open lines of communication between families using art. Each week will offer a different project to encourage communication, collaboration and creativity within a family.
Warrick, who is new to RAA this summer, initially reached out with the hope of using her education and passion for the arts in a different capacity.
“My passion for my field and the wellness of others was well received by RAA and they have supported this chance to bring these classes to our community,” Warrick said.
Warrick will also be teaching a Teen Self-Esteem workshop for kids ages 11-17 that guides students through the process of creating a unique self-portrait from start to finish.
Her Exploring Wellness Through Art class for adults 18 years and older will focus on a different area of wellness and students will be asked to immerse themselves in the art of creating in response to the topic.
Although the past year has been hectic, Warrick is grateful to have been able to continue working with clients in the mental health setting during this time.
“I am hopeful for the future and look forward to shifting into this role within the community offering an opportunity for exploration and wellness through the arts,” Warrick said.
Maria Getz Beery is returning to Richland Academy after many years away. She began teaching drama at RAA 25 years ago as a student at Ashland University. After going off to grad school and then NYC for 10 years, she’s ready to jump back in from where she started.
“Being back at RAA really is like coming home again,” Getz Beery said. “I could feel the same creative energy as soon as I walked in the door. I’ve studied and experienced quite a bit in my time away, and I wanted to develop new classes that were hands-on, high energy and collaborative.”
Getz Beery’s classes focus on youth from ages 8 to 18. The four returning classes she’ll be teaching, Junior Theatre Camp, Teen Acting Institute, Academy Children’s Theatre (ACTS) and Camp Shakespeare, will give children the opportunity to immerse themselves in acting and honing their skills.
“I think this time away has taught us to even more greatly appreciate and not take for granted the joy and the educational benefits of the performing arts,” Getz Beery said.
Ken Barnett’s workshop, Carrousel Painting Workshop, is in collaboration with Richland Carrousel Park where the class will paint wooden cut-out carrousel horses. Each student will paint a cut-out animal from the wooden figure to completion. One will remain on permanent display at the academy if time permits.
Barnett, who’s been making and selling wooden decorative crafts for many years, is anxious to share that talent with others.
“I hope that my students will take from our class an appreciation of the craftsmanship and artistry of carrousel animals,” Barnett said. “Most if not all will have ridden on one of these animals, but I would like for them to understand the artistry and amount of hard work that goes into the finished article.”
