MANSFIELD — The Ohio Department of Health reported seven new COVID-19 cases within the Mansfield City School district Thursday.

The cases, which include one student case and six staff cases, were reported in the weekly update of the state health department’s COVID-19 Dashboard.

Thursday’s update reflected cases reported to the state health department during Oct. 26 through Nov. 1.

Supt. Stan Jefferson was not available for comment, but told Richland Source that administrators are meeting today to discuss health and safety in the district.

Classes were cancelled at Malabar Intermediate and Spanish Immersion schools Thursday due to a staffing shortage. Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held virtually or by phone for all students in the district as scheduled.

According to the Ohio Department of Health’s website, cases are reported by the most recent week, which is defined as the previous Monday through Sunday. Only cases among students or staff that engaged in on-site instruction, activities or support services are included in the counts.

The cumulative count for Mansfield City Schools includes four student cases and ten staff cases since the tracker launched Sept. 17.

The Ohio Department of Health has cautioned against blaming schools for the spread of COVID-19.

“A report of COVID-19 should not be interpreted as an indicator that a school district or school isn’t following proper procedures – school cases can be a reflection of the overall situation in the broader community,” a statement on the department’s website said. “Families and staff should always feel free to ask questions of the school district or school.”
