MADISON — High school sports are set to go forward this fall, but it may just be moms and dads in the stands.
At a school board meeting Wednesday, high school principal Sean Conway shared an update on the number of tickets to be granted to each middle and high school athlete during the fall season.
Per state guidelines, only family members and loved ones will be permitted to attend games and seating will be limited to 15 percent capacity. Spectators are also required to social distance from other family groups. Spectators must wear a face covering.
Conway stated that most high school soccer games will take place in the football stadium to allow for more attendees.
All soccer players, middle school football players and junior varsity football players will be allowed four tickets per home game.
All volleyball players will be allowed two tickets per home game.
Varsity football, marching band and varsity cheerleaders will be allowed two tickets per home football game.
Conway praised the efforts of athletic director Doug Rickert, who was unable to make the meeting.
“He has been working tirelessly to give our kids every opportunity to compete,” Conway said.
During his update, superintendent Rob Peterson stated the online academy is almost fully staffed, though the district is still trying to fill a middle school special education position.
At a special meeting on Aug. 20, Peterson stated that approximately 570 students (about 20 percent of the student body) are enrolled in the district’s online academy.
At that meeting, the board approved online curriculum purchases totaling $99,646.
The board also heard updates from Food Service Supervisor Kim Pfleiderer and Operations Supervisor Steve Crist.
Pfleiderer gave an overview of her department’s work last school year and said the food service department is prepared to deliver meals to students at home if schools are shut down again this school year.
Crist shared that the district should be receiving equipment sometime in the next few days to update the air conditioning system in the career tech wing of the high school. The district awarded an installation contract to Standard Plumbing for $34,980. The total project cost will be approximately $15,000 under budget.
“We’ll probably wait until the weather cools down a little bit because the air conditioning will be down in that part fo the building while we do it,” he said.
