LEXINGTON — Lexington overwhelmed Shelby in the first quarter and never looked back to dump the Whippets 71-53 on Friday night.

The Minutemen shot a blistering 66 percent, hitting 27 of 41 field goals (5 of 10 from behind 3-point range) to control the game throughout.

Max Waldruff paced Lexington with 19 points and seven rebounds. Danny Shaffer netted 13 points after hitting three treys, and Kaden Berry racked up 11 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Grant Gossum’s 20 points topped Shelby, but no one else reached double figures.

Lexington utilized an 18-0 run and opened a 21-4 first-quarter bulge, that became a 32-16 halftime advantage. The Whippets climbed to within 44-32 heading to the final eight minutes, but Lex outscored the visitors 24-21 in the fourth period.

The Minutemen enjoyed a 31-25 rebounding advantage, and limited Shelby to just 4-of-20 shooting from beyond the arc (20 percent).

Sixth-seeded Lexington (13-9) meets No. 5-seed Ontario (15-6) in Friday’s 8 p.m. sectional title game at Bucyrus.

Shelby, the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference champions, finished the regular season at 17-5. The third-seeded Whippets are back in action Friday at 8 p.m. at Willard to face the survivor of Tuesday’s Clear Fork vs. Galion contest.
