ONTARIO — A Monday afternoon fire at Burlington, formerly Burlington Coat Factory, closed the store as fire departments tried to clear smoke from the store.

“It was a working fire when we pulled up,” said Springfield Township Fire Department Chorg Matt Carey. “It was actually such a large fire that the sprinkler system wasn’t putting it out.”

Carey said officials do not know what started the fire at the time of publication.

Madison Fire Department and the Ontario Police were on scene at the 550 N. Lexington Springmill Road location.

Once the fire was extinguished, firefighters kept the front doors open to vent smoke from the store.

“It’s a very large building and we have to get the smoke out,” the chief said.
