MANSFIELD — The Battle of Mansfield has become a one-sided affair over the past five years, and Mansfield Senior kept that storyline going on Friday night.
The Tygers pounded arch-rival Madison 49-7 on Senior Night at Arlin Field. During its current five-game winning streak, Senior High has outscored the Rams 219-43. Overall, Mansfield Senior leads the series 29-22-3.
“It just feels great to never lose to them in my high school career,” said senior Angelo Grose, who speared a 30-yard touchdown pass just before the half.
Mansfield Senior expects to host a home playoff game next Friday for the first time since 2013, and for just the third time in school history. Official pairings will be released by the Ohio High School Athletics Association on Sunday, but according to Joe Eitel’s projections Bay Village (7-3) figures to be the foe.
“We weren’t able to reach our first goal, which is to win the OCC,” coach Chioke Bradley said. “But making the playoffs is something that will help us move forward.”
The Tygers finished the regular season 9-1, 5-1 in the Ohio Cardinal Conference. Wooster topped Ashland on Friday night to earn an outright league title after beating Senior High two weeks ago on a TD pass in the final minute. But Bradley’s bunch seems to have rebounded from that disappointment with a pair of resounding wins over Mount Vernon and Madison.
“I feel like we played wonderful on both sides of the ball,” Grose said.
It sure looked like that, as this game was never in doubt. Mansfield Senior took a 7-0 lead on Terrance Flickinger’s 1-yard plunge in the first quarter, and ripped off three more scores in the second to open a 28-0 halftime bulge. It was 42-0 through three periods.
Madison’s Brandon Atwell registered a pick-6 in the fourth quarter to avert the shutout. The Rams finished the season 0-10, 0-6.
“Tygers got the juice, Tygers got the juice,” the Senior High players chanted after the game, and no one could argue the point.
Mansfield Senior outgained Madison 441-74 in total yards. Flickinger racked up 151 yards on 18 carries with a pair of scores. He also eclipsed 1,000 yards for the season.
Quarterback Cameron Todd hit 13 of 15 passes for 182 yards and 2 TDs. Grose snagged 7 catches for 72 yards and a score.
“Everybody is good in the playoffs,” Bradley said. “We’re going to enjoy this, but then you’ve gotta take the next step.”
