LEXINGTON — The academic challenge teams at Lexington High School started the season strong on Thursday, taking both the varsity and junior varsity titles at the Mid-Ohio Educational Service Center tournament.
“We are extremely excited about our academic challenge teams,” said Kevin Young, principal of Lexington High School. “They put in a lot of hard work, dedication and studying to prepare.”
The competition comprised of 36 teams competing in a bracket-style format. Lexington students advanced to the fifth and final round by correctly answering questions about a wide range of topics including literature, fine arts, geography, history, government, math, science and pop culture.
“We were extremely proud of both teams,” said coach Sara Thorburn. “The students are bright, but the way they collaborate, nurture their curiosity about the world and encourage one another really makes us thankful to be a part of this.”
Both teams faced Ashland in the final round.
“It is pretty cool to have both teams represent like that. And it’s also cool that Ashland was in the finals as well,” Young said. “Ashland’s been a great rival with us in all our sports in our conference, so that’s been pretty neat and congratulations to Ashland as well.”
The varsity team consists of Maggie Sheridan, Gavin Dean, Anshul Sringeri and Katrina Sheridan. Jennifer Covell, Seth Workman, Rachel Madore, Melina Shultz and Thomas Secrist make up the junior team.
Thorburn stated that while the tournament is considered separate from regular season competition, Lexington’s performance qualifies them for regionals. Both teams hope to keep the momentum going Monday at their first regular season meet.
