MADISON TOWNSHIP — In soccer parlance it’s called a clean sheet and Madison has authored four them in five postseason games.
While All-American Taylor Huff and Madison’s high-scoring attack command much of the attention, the Rams will play for a Division II regional title at noon Saturday against Oak Harbor largely because of the work the defense has done all season long.
Four of Madison’s nine shutouts have come along the tournament trail. That includes a 3-0 win over Rocky River in the regional semifinals earlier this week.
“They probably played the best they’ve played all year,” Madison coach Zac Huff said of defenders Julia Litt, Hannah Schmidt and Trinity Tucker along with goal keeper Morgan Rachel.
The Rams (16-1-4) have allowed 30 goals all season and six came in a loss to Division I regional finalist Whitehouse Anthony Wayne. Morgan, who has 79 saves on the season, was rarely tested against Rocky River because of the work Litt, Schmidt and Tucker did in front of her.
“Defensively, we played lights-out,” Taylor Huff said after the regional semifinal victory. “We had Trinity stop every ball … then we have Julia back there and Hannah. They clean everything up. Overall, we just played really tough defensively.”
The defense will have to be at its best Saturday against Oak Harbor (15-4-1). The Rockets advanced with a penalty kick shootout victory over Celina. The match was tied 1-1 after regulation and overtime before the Rockets won on PKs, 4-3.
Oak Harbor is led by Hannah Schulte, who has 29 goals on the season.
Madison counters with Taylor Huff, who has 30 goals and 23 assists. Phyllis Stanfield has 18 goals, while Kari Eckenwiler has 10 goals.
The Rams, who are playing for their second regional title in three years, have regained their footing after stumbling to the finish line during the regular season. Madison was just 2-1-3 in its final six matches after opening the year after opening the season 9-0-1.
“The schedule we played, it’s paying off right now,” Zac Huff said. “We’re playing our best soccer of the year.”
