COLUMBUS — Tyler Sabo made a strong closing argument.
The Ashland sophomore carded a 1-over 73 during the final round of the Division I state tournament at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course and finished with a two-day total of 152, good for a tie for eighth.
Sabo birdied two of his final four holes, including the par-4 ninth.
“I was just trying to finish strong and make the most of this round,” Sabo said. “I was a little tight (Friday). I was calmer today and just wanted to get a good score on the board.”
The Arrows finished 11th as a team with a two-day 688. Ashland shot a final-round 339, 10 strokes better than Friday.
“As a team, we improved from Friday,” Ashland coach Dan Priest said. “Their scores were higher than they would have liked, but this was a new experience for them.”
Kamden Mowry was next for Ashland with a two-day 170. Aiden Baker carded a 179, while Aidan Chandler had a 187 and Ryan Frazee had a 192.
All five of Ashland’s golfers in action over the weekend will be back next year.
“I think we’ll have a good chance to get back here as a team,” Sabo said. “We’re only going to grow and get better.
“The experience of playing in the state tournament can only help us.”
Lexington’s Trevor Dials followed Friday’s 85 with an 83 on Saturday, good for a two-day 168. Dials finished in a five-way tie for 48th.
