COLUMBUS — Lexington’s Trevor Dials shot an 85 during the opening round of the Division I state tournament at Ohio State’s rugged Scarlet Course and is tied for 47th going into Saturday’s final round.
The Ashland boys shot a 349 and were in 11th place.
Dials, Lex’s first state qualifier in more than 30 years, started on the front and was 4-over at the turn before encountering trouble on the back. He had a triple-bogey on the par-4 11th and was 7-over on his final four holes.
The Arrows didn’t find the going any eaiser. Tyler Sabo led the way for Ashland with a 7-over 79, good for an eight-way tie for 17th individually. Kamden Mowry was next with an 85, followed by Aiden Baker (88), Ryan Frazee (97) and Aidan Chandler (97).
Dublin Jerome was atop the leaderboard with a 309. Akron Hoban was just one stroke off the pace, followed by Lakota East 314. Cincinnati Moeller and Olentangy Liberty were tied for fourth at 317.
Green’s Maxwell Moldovan shot a 3-under 69 to lead the 72-player field. Hoban’s Solomon Petrie, Lake’s Alex Anderson and Dublin Jerome’s Tyler Groomes were tied for second, one stroke off the lead.
