MANSFIELD — A Mansfield woman is charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless homicide and endangering children for the 2018 death of her newborn child, according to Mansfield police Sgt. Matt Loughman.

Jamie Haynes

Jaimie Haynes, 31, of 292 Abbyfeale Road, was indicted April 5 in the “positional asphyxia-related death” of her son, Massiah Taylor. He was 14 days old and weighed 7.5 pounds at the time.

She was arraigned Tuesday in Richland County Common Pleas Court.

“She got those charges because she had been drinking (that evening),” Loughman said. “We believe that led to the child’s death — her not being able to properly take care of her son.”

According to Richland County Coroner’s investigator Bob Ball, the child’s parents told the OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital emergency room staff the baby was fed by Haynes around 3 a.m. on July 28.

Haynes was sitting on a couch in the living room and had placed the child next to her on her right leg on the couch. She fell asleep and when she woke, she noticed Massiah was not breathing.

“It is my opinion that the cause of death of Messiah Taylor is: positional asphyxia,” stated the signed autopsy report by Dr. Bryan D. Casto, deputy coroner for Montgomery County.

Positional asphyxia, is a form of asphyxia which occurs when someone’s position prevents the person from breathing adequately.

Haynes was ordered held on a $50,000 cash bond with electronic monitoring required if she makes the bond payment, according to court records.

No attorney has been listed for Haynes in court records.
