MANSFIELD — A felonious assault investigation by Mansfield police may soon become a homicide probe.

Brandon Ewers, 42, of 192 Boston Ave. was pronounced brain dead Wednesday at 8:56 a.m., but remained on life support Thursday at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital while organ donations are completed, according to Richland County coroner’s investigator Tom Stortz.

Ewers was driven to the hospital emergency room by a friend on Monday night. Mansfield police responded on the report of a possible drug overdose.

Stortz said Ewers may have sustained a head injury, leading to a brain bleed. He said Ewers’ body will be taken to Montgomery County for an autopsy after the organ donation process is done.

“He became unresponsive. We can’t say for sure yet what happened,” Stortz said. “(Brain bleeds) can be spontaneous.”

Mansfield police Capt. Shari Robertson said authorities continue to investigate the incident and that they will be awaiting information from the coroner’s office.
