Senator John Sherman had a large presence in Mansfield for a half century even if he wasn’t actually here most of that time. He certainly had a large home in Mansfield…actually more of a mansion.
It was so large that Harper’s Weekly said a wagonload of hay from the Senator’s farm might easily be driven down the hallways.
John Sherman was elected to Congress in 1855, and served as a Congressman, Senator, Secretary of the Treasury, and Secretary of State until his death in 1900.
Very little of Sherman’s estate on Park Avenue West remains to be seen today, and nothing of his mansion can be found on the site where it stood. If you go today to where the foundations of his house were planted you’ll be walking around somewhere in the parking lots behind Planned Parenthood.
