MANSFIELD — A strong odor reported throughout the city of Mansfield on Thursday prompted a response from the city.

Mansfield Mayor Tim Theaker and city safety services director Lori Cope announced that KoKosing Materials Inc. is the source of the odor permeating downtown Mansfield.

The high quality asphalt products and services, located at 46 E. Longview Avenue, began filling their tanks Thursday, leaving behind a pungent smell.

“Due to the current weather conditions, a strong odor of ‘gas’ or ‘sewer gas’ is being reported throughout the city,” said Theaker. “At this time, we do not believe there is a cause for health concern and the fire department has investigated many of the calls.

“The dissipation of the odor is dependent upon the weather conditions,” he added. “We will continue to monitor the situation and keep the public up to date.”
