Joseph Estill Breeze

MANSFIELD — The Richland County Sheriff’s Office is launching an investigation after an inmate at the Richland County Jail died on Saturday.

Joseph Estill Breeze, 37, was found unresponsive at approximately 11 a.m. on Saturday morning, according to the Sheriff’s Office. An inmate notified corrections staff that something was wrong with Breeze, and correctional and medical staff administered medical care immediately.

The Mansfield Fire Department was called and responded within minutes. Breeze was transported to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital and was later pronounced dead, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Breeze was incarcerated in the Richland County Jail on Aug. 27 on a felony warrant for the charge of probation violation out of the Richland County Common Pleas Court.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office was notified and an autopsy will be conducted.

“At this time it’s unknown what the cause of death is and the Sheriff’s Office will not speculate,” the office stated.

The Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit is conducting the investigation into Breeze’s death.
