ASHLAND – Local businessman Scott Donley is bringing his growing indie movie studio to Ashland.

Donley’s Los Angeles-based studio, Good Deed Entertainment, is best known as the distributor of Loving Vincent, which was nominated for an Oscar for best animated feature in 2017. Donley is also known locally as president of Donley Ford.

GDE is opening a new headquarters in Ashland, and some of the company’s key executives will relocate, The Hollywood Reporter reported last week. The company will still maintain an LA office.

Mayor Matt Miller confirmed the new headquarters will be located in the former Gerald’s Studio and Camera Shop building at 141 E. Main Street, which Donley owns and has been renovating. The building is at the southwest corner of East Main and Union streets, next to the VFW Post 1067. The studio is expected to open in early 2019.

Donley explained his reasons for the move in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

“The Midwest is an exciting, new entertainment market and is a prime location for both production and postproduction services,” he said. “Access to diverse filming locations, a wealth of talent in neighboring cities and Ohio’s excellent tax incentive make Ashland an ideal location for the next phase of our growth strategy.”

GDE is beginning production on two horror movies, Mad River Valley and 27 Times, both of which will be filmed in Ohio.

Donley could not be reached for comment this week.
