FINDLAY — Shelby finished third at state two years ago and took runner-up honors last fall.
The Whippets will get a chance to move up one more step on the podium this season.
Amanda Ruminski fired a 71 and the Whippets captured the girls’ Division II district golf championship with a team total of 325 Monday at Sycamore Springs Golf Course.
The top four teams and the top four individuals not on a qualifying team punched tickets to next week’s state tournament at Ohio State’s Gray Course. Shelby will be joined by runner-up Lima Central Catholic (331), St. Henry (370) and Bellevue (371).
Shelby won the district title two years ago, but finished second to LCC last year by virtue of a scorecard tie-breaker.
“Winning the district championship and qualifying for state never gets old,” Shelby coach Brad Ruminski said. “We saw some very tough competition from Lima Central Catholic, but the girls played very well again.
“It wasn’t a 302, but we’ll take it for sure.”
The Whippets set a school record with a 302 at last week’s sectional tournament at Valley View, led by Amanda Ruminski’s record-setting round of 68. The sophomore and daughter of the head coach carded a 71 Monday to win medalist honors.
Freshman Nicole Jones shot an 80, while Julia Gutchall carded an 82. Lexi Uplinger shot a 92 and Gillian Stumbo had a 103.
“As well as we played, there is still room for improvement,” Brad Ruminski said. “We have a couple of girls who would tell you they left some shots out there.”
Lakota’s Kyleigh Dull (73), Ottawa Hills’ Caroline Dayton (74), Gibsonburg’s Sydney Leyerle (75) and Liberty Center’s Olivia Zacharias (78) earned the individual state berths. Ontario’s Jaya Das shot a 90 to tie for 20th.
The state tournament begins Oct. 12 and concludes Oct. 13.
