(UPDATE 7:50 p.m.) MANSFIELD — Elementary students in Mansfield will not attend school Tuesday due to unseasonably hot temperatures in September.
Mansfield City Schools announced on Monday evening Prospect, Sherman, Springmill STEM, Woodland, and the Spanish Immersion School will be closed on Tuesday because of the forecast for extreme heat. None of the buildings have air-conditioning.
Malabar Intermediate, Mansfield Middle School and Mansfield Senior High School will be in session as usual.
St. Peter’s School also announced that school will be closed on Tuesday, Sept. 4.
According to the National Weather Service, heat index values in the upper 90s to near 100 degrees are possible Tuesday and Wednesday, mainly during the afternoon hours.
This is the second time in a week that Mansfield City Schools has closed its elementaries due to heat. The elementary schools closed on Aug. 28 due to similar weather.
Mansfield St. Peter’s School will also be closed Tuesday, the school announced Monday evening on its official Twitter account.
